S. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and incoming second gentleman Doug Emhoff received their Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at United Medical Center in Southeast D.C. on Tuesday.
The Moderna vaccine was administered by nurse Patricia Cummings at about 11 o’clock in the morning.
The incoming Vice President wore a loose black shirt and gray pants, while nurse Cummings wore a white jacket, blue scrubs, a shield and a green N95 mask and blue surgical gloves, as the needle went into Harris’ left arm.
Harris looked up and away as the needle went in but did not appear bothered. “That was easy…thank you. I barely felt it,” she said. “Thank you nurse Patricia.” Her husband, Emhoff, according to staff, took his vaccine outside the view of journalists.
After the shot, Harris said she is encouraging everyone to get the vaccine. “It is relatively painless, it happens really quickly. When it is your turn, get vaccinated. It’s about saving your life, the life of your family members and the life of your community,” she said. Patricia Cummings, who vaccinated Vice President-elect Harris and Mr. Emhoff was born in Guyana and is the daughter of two Guyanese immigrants to the United States. She has lived in the U.S. for 20 years and has been a nurse for the last 15 years.
Ms. Cummings has worked at UMC for two years, and is a clinical nurse manager responsible for overseeing the nursing staff. She has been administering the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to hospital leadership and staff since the hospital received its doses this month. Ms. Cummings was educated at Medgar Evers College, is pursuing her MSN at Walden, and previously worked at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY.
